Dominic Savio School (see photo)
Dominic Savio School has 1000 pupils, all coming from poor families of the zone. Every day we take turns to go to the Cava where we give tuition to pupils of the primary school. It is a time of expressing our kindness to the children. 32 mothers participate.
Foundation-See
The Dr Charles Ophthalmic Centre have set up a unit in the Dominic Savio School where they treat pre-school and primary-school children, teachers, and parents of the community. They examine patients and give the necessary treatment. This service was offered by a father of a Newman College pupil, who is a director of the foundation. Once a week, two professionals from his team come to the school for about four hours to examine patients. If a patient needs more specialized treatment, he/she is referred to the ophthalmic centre. Scholarship Programme (see photo)
Conbeca (with a scholarship) is a programme that started in 2003 in ‘The Conscience Association’, to respond to a concrete need. The aim was to offer assistance to adolescents and youth in difficult economic situations in completing their studies in the final three years of secondary school. The programme is complemented by workshops in values and the participation of some of those helped as volunteers. The mission of the programme is: “to form in an integrated way youth who demonstrate effort and good achievement, and are responsible and committed to their studies, but come from a background of poor economic resources”. Presently Conbeca has 468 students on scholarships, 43 centres, and 330 tutors. The participation of Newman in the programme: more than 50 fathers, mothers, and teachers tutor on a one-to-one basis, adolescents at risk in the areas of Boulogne, Benavidez, Tigre, Beccar, and José León Suárez, so they can complete their secondary school studies and dream of a promising future. The Santa Clara Workshop (see photo)
We are a group of mothers of pupils and past pupils of Newman and we organize a sewing and dressmaking workshop in the poor area of José León Suárez. For ten years now, we gather on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 16:30. We repair donated clothes and prepare materials for the following day’s workshop. Our work on Thursdays in the workshop is from 11:00 to17:00. We teach sewing and dressmaking to over 100 women from the area. 10 mothers participate.
The Encounter
We meet in a poor area near the college to spend some time in prayer and to support families. The volunteer mothers and the mothers of the area together bake cakes for the afternoon tea of the children. They also pray together and share experiences. Another group of volunteers help the children with their homework. A third group help in the administrative work of the parish. 24 mothers, fathers, and employees of Newman participate.
José C. Paz
The Christian Brothers have been helping people in this marginalized zone for more than 40 years. Our donations of food, furniture, and clothing are taken to the area by Brother Doherty. Presently our donations are used in 20 community kitchens. Training courses in trades and service occupations are also organized and help the people find employment. Participants: Brother Doherty, a College employee, a father of past pupils, and the team for donations and collections.
Father Brochero – The Road to Jericho Foundation (see photo)
The home was founded by Padre Juan Pablo Contepomi and members of the parish community of St Peter and Paul, who were faced with the reality of unemployment, broken homes, drug abuse and homeless people. They presented a new and alternative road to overcome what a society like ours, with so much riches and power, gives as the answer: egoism and indifference. The foundation has as its objective to help and accompany men and women in a homeless or abandoned situation to recover and strengthen themselves as protagonists in their own lives and live as dignified people. The Hospice of St Camillus (see photo)
The hospice, the first in Angentina, was founded by Father Juan Pablo Contepomi, a past pupil of Newman. It is a home where the terminally ill may rest, receive treatment for their symptoms, and receive the spiritual help that they require, accompanied with hope and dignity until the sacred moment of death. The volunteers from Newman:
+ accompany the patients and their relatives in a compassionate way;
+ accompany the families in making decisions about the illness;
+ accompany the families in mourning; and
+ educate towards the spread of the hospice culture in Argentina.

Aprovechando bien el poder de los padres de familia
El Colegio Newman extiende el espíritu de Edmundo Rice
Escuela Domingo Savio (véase la foto)
La escuela Domingo Savio tiene 1000 alumnos que provienen de familias de bajos recursos de la zona. Todos los días nos acercamos en dos turnos a la Cava para brindar, además de apoyo escolar en primaria, un rato de cariño. Participan 32 madres.
Fundación Ver
El Centro Oftalmológico Dr. Charles instaló un consultorio en la escuela Domingo Savio, donde se atienden chicos de pre-escolar y primaria, docentes y padres de la comunidad para hacerles un control y darles el tratamiento que necesitan. Este servicio fue ofrecido por un padre del colegio que dirige la Fundación. Una vez por semana 2 profesionales de su equipo atienden 4 horas aprox. para dar un diagnóstico. Si se necesita tratamiento el paciente es derivado al Centro. La misión de la Fundación Ver es dar asistencia a pacientes de escasos recursos con afecciones oculares complejas. Conbeca es un programa que surge en el 2003 dentro de la Asociación Conciencia, como respuesta a una necesidad concreta: brindar oportunidad y acompañamiento, durante los últimos tres años del Polimodal, a adolescentes y jóvenes de bajos recursos para poder completar sus estudios secundarios. Se complementa con talleres en valores y voluntariado por parte de los beneficiarios. Su misión es “Lograr el desarrollo en forma integral de jóvenes que, carentes de recursos económicos, demuestren esfuerzo, buen rendimiento, responsabilidad y compromiso en sus estudios”. Actualmente Conbeca suma 468 becados, 43 sedes de trabajo y 330 guías. La participación del Colegio Newman en el programa: más de 50 padres, madres y docentes acompañan a adolescentes en riesgo de Boulogne, Benavidez, Tigre, Beccar y José León Suárez para que puedan terminar sus estudios y soñar con un proyecto de vida. Taller Santa Clara (véase la foto)
Somos un grupo de madres de alumnos y ex alumnos del colegio y organizamos un taller de costura y tejido en el barrio marginado, José León Suárez. Hace 10 años, nos reunimos los miércoles de 14:00 a 16:30, para acondicionar ropa donada y preparar material para llevar al día siguiente a José León Suárez. Nuestro trabajo los jueves en el barrio es de 11:00 hasta 17:00. Enseñamos costura y tejido a más de 100 mujeres del barrio. Participan 10 madres.
El Encuentro
Un lugar marginado cerca del colegio donde nos unimos en momentos de oración y apoyo familiar. Las voluntarias amasan y preparan junto a madres del lugar pasteles para repartir como merienda a chicos del barrio. También rezan juntas y comparten experiencias. Otro grupo de voluntarias ayuda a los chicos con sus tareas. Un tercer grupo da apoyo administrativo a la parroquia. Participan 24 madres, padres y empleados del colegio.

Hace más de 40 años que los Brothers ayudan en esta zona de marginalidad. Nuestras donaciones de alimentos, muebles y ropa- son acercadas por Hermano Doherty. En la actualidad existen más de 20 comedores comunitarios, en donde el colegio ayuda con las donaciones . Se organisan cursos de capacitación y salida laboral. Participan Hermano Doherty, un empleado del colegio, el padre de ex alumnos y el equipo de donaciones y colectas.
Cura Brochero – Fundación Camino a Jericó (véase la foto)
Es un hogar para personas que viven en la calle, fundado por el Padre Juan Pablo Contepomi y por miembros de la comunidad parroquial de San Pedro y San Pablo, quienes ante la realidad de la desocupación, familias desunidas, abuso de drogas, personas sin techo, proponen un nuevo camino alternativo y superador del que toma una sociedad con tanta riqueza y potencial como la nuestra, en el que la indiferencia y el egoísmo son la “respuesta”. La Fundación tendrá por objeto: asistir, acompañar y promover en las personas adultas, varones y mujeres, que se encuentran en situación de calle y/o en estado de abandono, la recuperación y el fortalecimiento de su protagonismo vital para que les permita una vida digna. Hospice San Camilo (véase la foto)
El Hospice fue fundado por el Padre Juan Pablo Contepomi, un ex alumno del colegio y fue el primer hospice en Argentina. El Hospice es una casa para que el enfermo en fase terminal pueda descansar, recibir el control de sus síntomas y el apoyo espiritual que necesite, acompañándolo con esperanza y dignidad hasta el momento sagrado de su muerte. Los voluntarios de Newman:
+ realizan tareas de acompañamiento y cuidados compasivos a enfermos y familiares;
+ asesoramiento a familiares en la toma de decisiones que plantea la enfermedad;
+ seguimiento a familiares en duelo;
+ educación y difusión para promover la cultura Hospice en Argentina.
