Psalm 33 - Trust

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous.
Praise befits the upright.
Praise the Lord with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings.
 
Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
For the word of the Lord is upright,
all his work is done in faithfulness.
 
He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and all the host by the breath of his mouth.
 
He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle;
he put the deeps in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;  let all the inhabitants
of the world stand in awe of him.
 
For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.
The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.

The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.
 
The Lord looks down from heaven;
he sees all humankind.
From where he sits enthroned he watches
all the inhabitants of the earth--
he who fashions the hearts of them all,
and observes all their deeds.
 
A king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
The war horse is a vain hope for victory,
and by its great might it cannot save.
 
Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
to deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield.

Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your Father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."  So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Har'an.

Closing prayer:

Gracious and Awesome God, You call me -- rather, you call all of us -- to be your disciples. As a community, you challenge us to dedicate ourselves to you, to journey with you throughout our lives, to follow you over the long haul. Turning our lives over to you does not happen in a single instant. True conversion and change is a daily challenge, taking time.  The pace sometimes seems slow, with mistakes and steps backward, but the journey continues, nonetheless.  God, help us to be patient with ourselves along this journey, as you are with us, always. May we take the lead from you, and, unlike so many other times in our lives, resist the need for instant results. May we remember that, however slow and however hopeless it may seem sometimes to truly change, it is progress, not perfection, that is our goal. That is all you ask of us, to work, pray, and struggle throughout life, keeping our eyes on you, your vision, your will for our lives, and your kingdom that we are called to help bring forth
